In the first eight months of the year, the DWC and DIR Anti-Fraud Unit suspended 178 medical providers. There are 86 providers with criminal charges, with the remaining providers being suspended from the Medicare or Medicaid programs due to fraud or abuse, or have lost their professional license.
There are 516,000 liens that have been stayed to prevent the criminally-charged providers from seeking payment for their liens while the criminal case is pending. You can see the list of providers here: https://www.dir.ca.gov/Fraud_Prevention/List-of-Criminally-Charged-Providers.pdf. In reviewing the list, the majority of the providers are in the Southern California area.
Since 2017 there have been 649 providers suspended from the workers' compensation system. In addition, there have been 63,000 liens dismissed with a value of almost $775 million.
