During the period September 2019 to September 2020, it is believed that closing the borders for the pandemic caused drug dealers to stretch cocaine supplies by mixing in fentanyl.  Cocaine users who are not aware that they are taking fentanyl rather than cocaine are at greater risk for overdose and the related increase in deaths is believed to a direct result of that practice. 

It is also suspected that unemployment and social distancing are strong contributors as well, especially for those that need additional support and monitoring for depression, and substance abuse.
